The colon is part of the digestive system of the body. The small and large intestine help removes waste materials out of the system, when these waste failed to eliminate, these will form a toxic substance that stick into the intestinal wall which later on form a cancerous cell.

Colon cancer started as a benign or non-cancerous cell scientifically called adenomatous polyps, over time this non-cancerous cell when taken for granted and without submitting to regular screening tests may progress to colorectal cancer. American Cancer Society recorded an almost 100,000 cases annually and the statistic around the world is increasing every year.

These are the different types of Colon Cancer:

Adenocarcinoma – refer to the malignat tumor of epithelial tissue. This is the most common type of colon cancer with reported 95% accounts of all colorectal cancers. This cancer originates in the gland and has subtypes, namely: mucinous and signet ring cell.

Leiomyosarcoma of the colon and rectum- this type of cancer takes place in the soft muscle of the colon and rarely happens, in fact it only accounts less than 2% of colon cancer. The average person usually diagnosed with this type of cancer is 60 years old.

Lymphoma-this type of cancer is seldom to occur and very rare to happen, this originates around the rectum area, but lymphoma which formed inside the body will most likely progress in the colon than in the rectum.

Melanoma-just like lymphoma, melanoma is a rare type of colon cancer. This is undetected until the disease is spread to the colon and rectum with a minimum of five years of detection. Symptoms include nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain and rectal bleeding. Melanoma has the tendency to spread to other organs.

Neuroendocrine tumors-this type of colon cancer can be divided into two categories: aggressive and indolent. Aggressive colon tumors usually inflicted the right or ascending colon and diagnosed in more advance stage. This accounts for about 4 % of colorectal cancer and the average age affected is 65 years old. Large and small cells of neuroendocrine tumors are considered aggressive. Indolent is the most common type of neuroendocrine tumors. This refers to the carcinoid tumor of the colon, occurring mostly in the rectum than in the colon.

Colon Cancer is preventable according to medical practitioners, though this can be attributed to family history in rare cases, this can be prevented by taking a more disciplined lifestyle. Eating healthy foods rich in fibers, antioxidants and vitamins can improve the immune system’s defense against life-threatening diseases including colon cancer.
